Romulus along with several others, were feral children that were part of a program to re-educate and hopefully reenter them into normal society. Three doctors, among them being Dr. Jack Hack (unknown to Cassie), were doing steady progress. Especially with Romulus as he was learning to speak normal words. All in all the children seemed fine and happy. At some point, Dr. Hack left but some of his things from his "studies" was left behind for the other remaining doctors.
However, hoping to improve the progress, one of the doctors decided to use a drug that Dr. Hack was studying. Unknown to them, it was something that apparently made "slashers". Though it did work to a degree, it clearly had side-effects. Romulus became extremely aggressive to one of the doctors whom he once called "dad". The children quickly began to pick up their more feral and animalistic habits. Romulus clearly became the alpha and the second, an older girl became beta and followed his lead at also become hostile to their teachers/guardians; while the younger children though submissive followed and refrained from them.
It escalated as Romulus "challenged" the adult guardians and obviously won due to the drugs' side effects. He became true alpha and murdered the doctors/guardians. With them gone, Romulus and the children roamed free and wild. They hunted and attacked like real animals. Cassie and Vlad eventually stumbled upon their home, after hearing stories and also was curious about her father being there. She did not find the evidence of her father but did find the journals from the decease doctors. That is when Romulus and the children attacked. Though Cassie was quick to fight them off, Vlad froze still seeing them as children and did not wish to harm them.
With the children too far gone, Cassie killed Romulus and the girl in defense. The remaining children would follow, though Vlad hoped he could persuade Cassie not to. Cassie stated they had no choice, even with Romulus gone, the drug given to them was destined to make them slashers.
